A Tree Branch
Outside my window a tree branch speckled with lichen and moss. The look is hard and leathery like the head of a lizard or like a snake coiled sleeping in the sun - a summer afternoon with nothing stirring the sycamore leaves - themselves as big as lily pads in the heat--a time of quiet, without expectation; a silence that listens mostly to itself, waiting until some ancient part of the brain is stirred by the dark of a passing cloud…
